Only 3 kilometres from McLaren Vale village with its wineries and fine restaurants is historic Wirra Wirra Winery, home of the famous Church Block wine which originally derived its name from the delightful building that is now Old Bethany Chapel Bed and Breakfast. McLaren Vale in South Australia is the centre of a picturesque wine producing area just 40 minutes away from the city of Adelaide. It's just a few kilometres from some of Australia's most spectacular beaches and a short drive to the Fleurieu Peninsula townships of Victor Harbor and Goolwa and the Murray River. History of Bethany Chapel The Bethany Chapel was built in 1854, the walls made of cob, an old English West Country construction method. Mud from the adjacent creek was mixed with small stones and straw and puddled by oxen, then poured between form work to construct the walls, which were then rendered with lime mortar to a pale cream coloured finish. The roof was thatched. The chapel was purchased by the present owners in 2003 from the Uniting Church. With a creek running through the corner of the block, huge gum trees hundreds of years old and olive trees laden with fruit, the defects in the old cob building could easily be overlooked. A strong family connection, with weddings in the church and ancestors in the small cemetery made it an irresistible buy, if only to prevent its possible demolition.
