Welcome to Meredith House in Swansea, on the east coast of Tasmania. Situated on a hill in the centre of our historic seaside town, overlooking the Freycinet Peninsula and Great Oyster Bay. Meredith House is a Heritage Tasmania and National Trust classified home built in 1853, furnished with handcrafted red cedar furniture and family antiques, which has provided accommodation for over 100 years. Built in 1853, this substantial and imposing house is renowned for its warmth and charm - all those happy holidays and honeymoons over the years have added a patina to this gracious home. The house has been extensively renovated, and now offers every comfort for the discerning traveller including en-suites, mini bars, TVs and telephones, without losing any of its ambience. Our Heritage House offers unique colonial accommodation including six rooms upstairs and a luxurious two room suite downstairs with its own open fire and spa. Facilities such as our Lounge and well stocked Library are shared by House and Mews guests. Meredith House was built in 1853 by J. A. Graham on land purchased from Charles Meredith, husband of noted colonial artist and poet, Louisa Anne Meredith. The first occupier was Gordon Burgess who named it Laughton House after Laughton in Essex England, from where he came. Subsequently he married a Miss Cope, a cousin of Louisa Meredith who ran it as a Girls Grammar School and for a period it was a maternity hospital.
