Olives Cottage opened mid-2004 for travellers seeking either self-catering accommodation or bed and breakfast. The recently renovated cottage is in a delightful setting, on a one acre (0.4 hectare) property at Windermere, on the edge of the Tamar River. Views of the garden and the river, across to the West Tamar vineyards and hills, are shown above. Olives Cottage should particularly suit the food and wine lover. The owners have designed the cottage to cater for their own interests in these areas. There is a new, well-equipped kitchen, a herb garden, a wonderful deck for entertaining, and a magnificent barbecue pit. Windermere is an ideal base to explore the northern region of Tasmania. Within short driving distances are numerous vineyards, a cherry farm, nashi orchard, apple orchard and strawberry farm. Launceston and the Tamar arguably form the gourmet centre of Tasmania, with the island's largest wine region, and consistently the states top-rated restaurants, and indeed restaurants that rank among the nations best. The Tamar, in this area, is lake-like, in a serene form, with the Lake District in England providing the Windermere name. The beautifully sited, Normanesque St Mathias Church, just along the road from the cottage, is just one of the other British touches in the region.
