Albany was actually proclaimed a city on July 1st 1998 and is the earliest settlement in Western Australia. The town was founded in 1830. Its population of about 34,000 is spread around the beautiful twin hills of Mt Melville and Mt Clarence and has wonderful views of King George Sound and Princess Royal Harbour. The Forts and historical buildings are a must to visit. Albany is renowned as one of the most beautiful resorts in Western Australia and is well known for its historical buildings, fishing, sailing, diving, sightseeing, bushwalking & farming to name a few. The coastline is stunning, so visitors should plan to stay a few days to take it all in. Whale-watching late June to October is very exciting and popular. Visitors should not fail to visit the many wineries and Arts & Crafts places in this region - such as in the Porongurps, Mt.Barker and Denmark. You need at least a week.
