The Lady Denman Museum Gallery was opened by Olympian Dawn Fraser on the 3rd of December 1988. The museum concentrates on the history of Jervis Bay and the surrounding district including: early exploration, the timber industry, Aboriginal history, early settlement, lighthouse history, shipwrecks, coastal shipping, whaling history and Naval base history. The Museum is also home to the privately donated Halloran Collection, which is, according to antiques expert Ian Armstrong, an "amazing collection of nautical, navigation and surveying items possibly in Australia. The collection of surveying instruments is not only of national importance but is of world class and there are possibly only two other collections in the world to compare". |
