Penguins at Bicheno
Penguins in the garden I have previously been to organised evening penguin tours in other states, but meeting up with penguins at the bottom of a garden in Bicheno, on the East Coast of Tasmania, was an experience I had never dreamed of. After dusk the tiny fairy penguins left the surf in groups and headed for their rookery in the rocks and vegetation, calling out to each other at intervals. This exit under the safety of darkness, to avoid predators was quite noisy. Before heading for their burrows, these flightless little birds waddled around the rock platform, briefly interacting with one another. If you stay still, quiet and out of the way, you can witness an amazing event. |
