Byron Bay Ocean Swim Classic 2011

First across the line Byron Bay Ocean Swim Classic

First across the line Byron Bay Ocean Swim Classic

Today we are visiting Byron Bay, a popular holiday destination with an assortment of accommodation options and magnificent surf beaches.  Johnson, Bay and Lawson Streets are lined with many boutiques, galleries, therapies, cafes and restaurants.

We visited the Byron Bay Community Markets in the Butler Street Reserve where there were a multitude of craft, clothing, plant and food stalls.

There was a big crowd at the beach attending the iconic Byron Bay Ocean Swim Classic 2011. Swimmers enter the water at Wategoes Beach for a 2.2km swim around The Pass and across the bay to the finish at Main Beach in front of the Surf Club. First across the line this year was an 80 year old a red capped male.

Other beaches at Byron Bay are Belongil Beach, an off-leash dog exercise beach, Clarks Beach which is ideal for windsurfing and tallow Beach which is choppy but good for fishing.

We drove out to Cape Byron and the Lighthouse, the most easterly point of Australia where there are frequent dolphin sightings and whales in migration season.

There are many exciting activities in Byron, so plan a visit and try ballooning, horse riding, flying trapeze, skydiving, hang gliding, mico-light flights or a mountain bike tour.
