Yellow Waters Billabong

Jabiru in Kakadu

Jabiru in Kakadu

We headed out early this morning to Cooinda, for a cruise in a canopied boat on the Yellow Water Billabong, on the South Alligator Floodplain. Although birds can be seen most times throughout the day, they are most active early morning and late afternnon. We didn’t have to look far to see a large number of the 60 species who call this World Heritage Wetland their home. This green necked Jabiru and its reflection was simply stunning and its stick nest was located above in the treetops. We were also lucky enough to see a tiny Jacana bird and its fluffy chicks walking on the lily pads with their huge feet and claws. The cruise was made even more worthwhile, when we spotted four salt water crocodiles sunning themselves on the bank. The Warradjan Aboriginal Centre was nearby the cruise finish point, so we made a full day of it.
