Mamukala Wetlands and Bird Hide
Waterlilies in full flower Driving along the Arnhem Highway 7km west of the South Alligator River we came across the Mamukala Wetlands & Bird Hide. Once you have paid your $25 National Park entry fee, there are quite a number of attractions such as this one that are free. During May a number of the walking tracks were still closed, but we were able to walk around the board walk which is located only 100 metres from the car park and is wheelchair friendly. We feel lucky that we have just managed to miss a bus load of tourists from Darwin and have the experience in silence to ourselves. During the late dry season this wetland is inhabited by thousands of migratory Magpie Geese, but arriving in the heat of the day we are contented with an uninterrupted view of the beautiful white and mauve waterlilies in full flower. The bird hide contains a number of information boards detailing the flora and fauna of the area. |
