Exploring North Stradbroke Island
The Blue Lake While holidaying on North Stradbroke Island we decided to explore the Brown Lake and Blue Lake. Just 4km east of Dunwich, the Brown Lake named for its tannin colour from the paperbark leaves, is a great spot for family picnics and swimming. It has facilities and you can drive right in and park under the trees. A bit further on is the Blue Lake with a 5km return walking track only, which is reasonably flat and mostly shaded. This is a quiet spot filled with birdsong and a variety of native animals, including a Lace Monitor that we saw climbing a tree. There are no facilities at the Blue Lake but we did pass one young couple who had taken a jogging stroller on the walk. On the way home we noticed the North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum housed in the Benevolent Asylum buildings. This fabulous museum is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and houses an amazing variety of local history. Who would think such a small island could have so many interesting things happen there. |
