Baird Bay Seal Lions
The dive boat After an overnight at Streaky Bay on the Eyre Peninsula, we had an exciting morning planned at Baird Bay. We had booked ahead for an Eco Tourism experience of a lifetime, swimming with dolphins and sea lions. After suiting up at the Marine Mammal Information Centre, Alan took eight of us out on the bay in his dive boat. Due to the oily chemical nature of sunscreen, we are asked not to apply any until after we have finished our swim. We are also briefed on how to behave around wild animals. These sea lions and dolphins are not trained or hand fed and need to be interacted with on their own terms. On the eastern side of the bay we leave the boat and crawl on our bellies through the rocky shallows, so that we are not taller than the sea lions on the surrounding rocks. We come to a deep pool where we are able to swim underwater with the inquisitive somersaulting sea lions, some with cubs. This is a truly magical experience, which continues for quite some time until they tire of the game and sunbake on the sand. We reboard the boat and head over to the western side of the bay where a pod of dolphins are at play. The dolphins are more aloof than the sea lions, perhaps just as well as they are quite a bit larger. After romping around us for a short time they head off and do their own thing, leaving us in awe of their beauty. |
