Salamanca Markets at Hobart
Weighing the organic produce We made sure that we arrived in Hobart on a Friday night, so that we could wake to the excitement of the Salamanca Markets in the morning. As our hotel overlooked Sullivan’s Cove, we wasted no time in spotting the hundreds of stall holders setting up for these weekly markets, which operate between 8.30am and 3.00pm on Saturdays. First we located an outdoor café set up against the backdrop of the former sandstone warehouses, and enjoyed a hearty breakfast in the crisp morning air. Salamanca is Australia’s largest outdoor markets and they feature arts, crafts, clothing, flowers, organic produce and buskers, who provide a great variety of music and entertainment. I particularly enjoyed watching one stall holder weighing out her fresh apples on large hanging scales. By the time we had wandered up and down the stalls, it was time to choose something yummy for lunch from one of the great food stalls. What a fabulous day! |
