Fur seals at Port Fairy

Playtime in the Moyne River

Playtime in the Moyne River

The Moyne River at Port Fairy, in Victoria, would have to be one of the most charming holiday locations in Australia. This fishing village, located along the Great Ocean Road, boasts 50 National Trust classified buildings and is rich with galleries, top dining venues and natural attractions, including Lady Julia Percy Island, which is home to the largest colony of fur seals in the Southern Hemisphere. I was walking along the jetty in the morning sunshine to take some photos of some of the beautiful buildings along the river, when a splashing sound drew my attention to the water below. A very cute fur seal was performing backward somersaults in the river, while at the same time throwing around a piece of half eaten fish. Undisturbed by my interest, she jumped out of the water onto one of the rocks and commenced a grooming session. Folding back the end of her hind flipper, she revealed claws, which she used to comb the fur around her dainty little ears. A truly amazing encounter in a magical setting.
