Emus on the Beach
Emus walking on Darby Beach If you are visiting the Wonthaggi area near Phillip Island , you must absolutely put aside a day or two to visit the Wilsons Promontory National Park, near Yanakie in VIC. We started our morning with a walk to Cotters Lake, where within minutes we saw wallabies up close nibbling at the grass and stayed co-operatively still for photos. A group of shy emus running in the middle distance proved more difficult to photograph though. Make sure you take water, it was quite warm. At Darby Beach we were rewarded by a remarkable site. Right in front of us, a pair of calm emus walked across the track on their way to the beach!! We held our breath as I grabbed for the camera to snap these elegant creatures observe us, then go on their way. Talk about feeling part of nature!! Our last stop, as a thunder storm was brewing, was Squeaky Beach, where the quartz sand squeaks under your feet, although more amazing were the huge rocks forming a maze down by the water. The lightening forced us back to the car, but we vowed to come back for a week in the near future. |
