Thorny Devil in the Desert
Thorny Devil on bitumen road After a walk along Shell Beach and Hamlin Pools near Denham, we were on our way along the North West Coastal Highway to Carnarvon. Up ahead we saw that a couple had stopped and were looking at something on the road. We slowed down and pulled over to see what they had found. I couldn’t believe that right there on the road was a little Thorny Devil. A ranger also stopped to see if there was a problem. He told us that despite their intimidating spikes, thorny devils are quite harmless and live in the Spinnifex. They usually grow to 15-20 cm and eat ants, one at a time with their sticky tongue. They are slow moving, carry their tail in the air and despite being able to change colour, they are preyed upon by desert birds. After we had all studied him closely, the ranger directed the Thorny Devil back into the safety of the scrub. |
