Stromatolites in Hamelin Pool

Close up of stromatolites

We were on our way to Monkey Mia in Western Australia to feed the dolphins and pulled off to explore the stromatolites at Hamelin Pool, which is a World Heritage site. Stomatolites are the oldest living things on the planet and Hamelin Pool is one of only three places on the earth where you can see them. Stromatolites look like rocks, but are built by microbes and are responsible for generating the oxygen that allowed other life to develop. They have grown in Hamelin Pool due to the high salinity of the water. Boardwalks have been constructed to allow visitors access and information boards erected so that you can learn more about these fascinating, living fossils.
