Diamond Tree at Pemberton
Climbing the Pegs We had a "huge" day of trees planned, driving from Pemberton to Denmark, starting with the Diamond Tree, located 10km south of Manjimup. Climbing this 51m tall karri tree by an open peg ladder is not for the feint hearted, the descent being even more terrifying than the climb. I had to concede defeat after just a few metres as looking down through these very narrow rungs readily created second thoughts about the exercise! The Gloucester Tree at Pemberton, was the same result, not climbed! Although disappointed by our failures, we were more optimistic about the Giant Tingle Tree, Valley of the Giants and Treetop Walk, we were heading towards, just East of Walpole. The boardwalk around the tingle trees of the Ancient Empire, constructed to protect their roots from foot traffic, certainly was an experience to appreciate. Being so far under the canopy was cool and peaceful and the seats here and there gave opportunity for reflection. But the highlight of the day was definitely the steel walkway of the Treetop Walk, 38m above the forest floor. Although the construction does sway and bounce slightly, it is suitable for families and the first part is even wheelchair accessible. Literally a breath of fresh air, we will remember this walk through the tree tops for ever! |
