Swimming with the whale sharks
Whale Shark at Ningaloo Reef WA No trip to the Ningaloo Reef of Exmouth would be complete if you didn’t have a swim with the whale sharks. We were picked up from our motel in Exmouth at 7.30 am by the tour, consisting of 16 adult swimmers and taken out to sea. While we waited for the spotter plane to site the Whale Sharks we snorkelled around looking at some colourful fish. We had four drops in all, the first ones with a 4m shark and the last two with a 5m shark, about ten years old. They are slow moving, swimming about 5km per hour while they filter feed on plankton and krill. They have a white underbelly and magnificent grey with white spotted markings on top, each one an individual. Although enormous, they are very gentle fish and relate well to divers, though you need to keep clear of their powerful tail. Smaller fish also swam underneath the sharks as a form of protection. We returned from the sea at 4.30pm with the memory of an amazing experience that we will never forget. |
