Quokkas at Rottnest

Incredibly cute quokkas

I don’t travel well on boats, but was determined to go to Rottnest Island and see a Quokka. I certainly didn’t have to wait long to see one, for as we headed to the store at Thomson Bay Settlement to get some refreshments, one cheeky quokka hopped around the outdoor tables begging for scraps. However we wanted to see them in their natural habitat, so sought a map and directions from the local guides and headed down to Garden Lake, where we soon noticed a group in the tea-tree scrub. Although more timid than the store variety, this little family group were quite inquisitive about our cameras and kept standing up to peer into our lenses. We sat on the ground and tried to blend in, while they went about their business, including a bit of a scrap between two of the younger quokkas. Definitely worth the boat trip and being rained on.
