Camel rides at Cable Beach

Cable Beach at sunset

Cable Beach at sunset

At around 3pm we gathered expectantly on the northern end of Cable Beach to wait for the camels to arrive for our ride. Many people were swimming and walking along the beach and some were even having an evening meal, out of the back of their four wheel drives parked on the beach. Eventually two camel teams arrived in colourful coats and proceeded to kneel on the sand one behind another, some more readily than others. I’ve never considered camels beautiful, but I was convinced mine was fluttering its eyelashes and smiling at me. Then it was time for that famous picture postcard experience of riding along the beach in the sunset. To complete the evening, as if by magic, a pearl lugger sailed by with sails flapping in the ocean breeze.
