Bungle Bungles
Piccaninny Gorge Bungle Bungles We chose to fly over Lake Argyle from Kununurra to the Bungle Bungles in Purnululu National Park, which was a great decision, as the road was blocked to vehicles from the last of the wet season. Supplies for the landlocked groups already at Purnululu had to be flown in, until the flooding receded. Most people are familiar with the geological formations of the Bungle Bungles from the Qantas Choir Commercial filmed in Piccaninny Gorge. The layered formations were formed 350 million years ago from the sediment of an old riverbed, compressed into sandstone, lifted up to form a mountain range and then weathered and cracked to form domes. The raging waters of the wet season continue to sculpt features such as Cathedral Gorge, an amazing natural amphitheatre that we walked to for lunch. As rain had recently fallen we were able to take a few interesting reflection photographs. Our guide knew the area well and was able to provide us with great information and answer all our questions. |
