Red Dog of the Pilbara
Red Dog statue outside Dampier While looking for more tissues during the screening of the Red Dog feature film, I recognised the bronze statue that I had photographed outside the town of Dampier a few years ago. This beautiful kelpie-cattle dog cross was a local legend of the Pilbara area and much loved by the locals during the seventies. Red Dog was a free spirit and wandered the area to visit his many friends by hitching rides on trucks, buses, cars and trains. The film offers an accurate portrayal of history and a great peek into the WA outback mining life and scenery, not to mention the fabulous seventies fashions. As well as the recent film, there have been several books written about Red Dog, a website devoted to him, and a complete history of his life can be seen at the Karratha Public Library. |
