Norfolk Island
Norfolk Island is one of Australia’s external territories, which was granted self-government in 1979.
It is located 1,600km north east of Sydney in the South Pacific Ocean and is one and a half hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time. It has duty free shopping and is not covered by Medicare.
It is an eroded remnant of a basaltic volcano, enjoys a mild subtropical climate and features coral reefs and rainforests.
Norfolk Island was sighted by Captain Cook in 1774 and named after the Duchess of Norfolk. It has had a colourful history, being established as a penal settlement twice and then settled by a group of Pitcairn Islanders, descended from the Bounty Mutineers.
